MADRID 29 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Secretary of the United States Department of State, Antony Blinken, this Saturday urged the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, to promote a transition in Syria led “by the Syrians themselves”, in order to avoid “terrorist” risks, and to redouble efforts to guarantee that the country’s new Government ensures the protection of Human Rights.
“Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke today with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss the latest developments in Syria. Secretary Blinken emphasized the need to support a political process led and controlled by Syrians themselves that defends Human Rights and prioritizes an inclusive and representative Government,” said the secretary’s spokesman, Matthew Miller, in a statement.
Along the same lines, Fidan added in the framework of this telephone conversation, the objective pursued by both powers is “to prevent terrorism from endangering the security of Turkey and Syria.”
In Syria, militias led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), formerly Al Qaeda in the Levant, overthrew the Bashar al Assad regime on December 8 and formed a transitional government that has promised to respect the rights of all ethnic and religious minorities living in the country.
However, the Constitution has been suspended for three months and attacks against Christians or Alawites have been reported and Kurds in the northeast are defending themselves from attacks by pro-Turkish militias.
