A joint investigation team announced this Monday the request for an arrest warrant against the president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, – momentarily removed from office – for his declaration of martial law in early December, for insurrection and abuse of power after ignoring up to three summonses to be questioned about the controversial decision.
The team composed of the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO), the Police and the investigation unit of the Ministry of Defense have filed the petition with the Western District Court of the South Korean capital, Seoul.
In the request, investigators allege that Yoon led an insurrection and abuse of his position when he declared a state of emergency on December 3 and that he allegedly ordered the Army to prevent deputies present in Parliament from voting against the decree.
The now deposed president has denied the accusations, defending that the declaration of martial law was an “act of government” to warn the opposition party, which has a majority in the National Assembly, against what he described as an abuse of legislative power. , which seeks to support the North Korean regime.
Yoon’s defense has promised to take “formal measures” in response. “It is a request from an agency that does not have the authority to investigate (the charges of insurrection),” Yun Gap-geun, one of the legal representatives of the president, who was dismissed in a motion approved by the National Assembly last Friday.
The Constitutional Court of the Asian country must decide between now and June whether to restore his powers or permanently disqualify him.
