This “Boy Genius” Is Now a Young Man With a Plan to Remove All Plastic From Oceans by 2050

If we continue to dream we will do amazing things in the world. Such was the dream of a young boy named Boyan Slat. His dream was to clean the oceans from all of the plastic waste and pollution. His dream led to the invention which has a clear message and taught the entire world the lesson.

When Boyan was 18, he launched a nonprofit organization called The Ocean Cleanup. The main goal of this organization was to clean the oceans from all of the plastic released into them.

As of now, the team has over 80 researchers, engineers, computational modelers, and scientists that are responsible for the creation of advanced technologies made for cleaning the plastic pollution off of the oceans.

Boyan was responsible for designing a device to clean the litter from the ocean and it was tested in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch several years later. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest collection of waste plastics in the world.

The Garbage Patch is located between Hawaii and California and it covers 600,000 square miles of the ocean. The patch is responsible for the death of more than 100,000 animals from 700 species.

The patch also affects humans as well. According to The Ocean Cleanup:

“Once plastic enters the marine food web, there is a possibility that it will contaminate the human food chain as well.”

The first gadget that they released for cleanup was in September 2018 in the Pacific Ocean. However, this tool was not collecting the plastic well enough. Instead, it released the collected plastic into the ocean again. Because of that, the gadget needed to be modified and improved by the organization.

The updated version of the gadget is using parachutes underwater to slow the movement of the arrays through the water. Boyan stated that this device will allow to “take the plastic distribution down from twice the size of the state of Texas, to 1/35 the size of the city of Houston.”

The Ocean Cleanup website shows us how the latest version of the gadget works:

“Our cleanup technology has been designed to do the hard job of concentrating the plastic first before it can be effectively removed from the ocean. The system consists of a long floater that sits at the surface of the water and skirt that hangs beneath it. The floater provides buoyancy to the entire system, while the skirt prevents debris from escaping underneath and leads it into the retention system, or cod end. A cork line above the skirt prevents overtopping and keeps the skirt afloat.”

The waste is collected every few months by ships that will return it to land for the plastic to be recycled.

In just five years, the device that the nonprofit is using should clean the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 50%. Boyan also hopes that he will get rid of all of the debris in the ocean by 2050. The nonprofit has hopes that “after fleets of systems are deployed into every ocean gyre, combined with source reduction”, the gadget will remove more than 90% of the plastic in the oceans by 2040.
