Guinness Book of World Records on August 28, 2019, officially registered John and Charlotte Henderson as the oldest living married couple in the world. They were 80 years in true love, companionship, and friendship.
They both have 212 years (John is 107 and Charlotte is 105). Their 80th anniversary they celebrated on Sunday, December 15. Their marriage was in 1939 during the Great Depression. However, it hasn’t had any effect in their marriage, because they took solid roots in that time of great distress.
A beautiful love story
They met in 1934 at the University of Texas (UT). John was a star footballer there while Charlotte was a student of the Faculty for teachers.
Speaking about their first meeting John said:
“Charlotte looked over her shoulder and smiled and I knew I wanted to take her on a date.” He noticed that she was anxious for him to ask her!
Since they had no children, they lived an adventurous life at a young age, filled with travel and tours, as much as their conditions allowed. However, in their golden years, they decided to slow down their lives and enjoy the village of Longhorn Village. They lived in a retirement community for the elderly, but later, in 2017, they moved to a friendly alumni-affiliated community of the University of Texas.
Explaining their life as a couple John Henderson said that they used to go on cruises, but now they have to take it easy. They enjoy watching sports and they are always planning what they are going to do the next day.
John has a tradition of watching at least one Longhorn football game every year for 84 years. Likewise, for the past 9 years, John is the oldest living player of a former University of Texas football player.
True mutual understanding and friendship
They have many important memories from the earlier years when they were together, which they remember fondly. One of their fondest memories is their wedding trip when they spent $ 7 at a hotel on their honeymoon.
This couple is an inspiration to many others out there, as well as their mutual deep love and living attitude moving forward.
Their nephew Free told TODAY:
“They don’t dwell on the past. You won’t hear them say, ‘Oh, if only it were 1952 again, everything would be great.’ They are still making plans for their future together.”
Free points out that Charlotte loves taking care of her husband to make sure everything is OK. No matter where they are and what they do, she has to make sure that he is well.
She loves to know every movement of John where she goes when she comes back and what she is doing.
The health situations of both John and Charlotte are still excellent. Using his excellent form, John exercises daily. What this couple really adores is their positive attitude about life, which is essential for good health and longevity.
John doesn’t believe that their long life is due to the fact that they’ve never had kids. Their advice for a long life is to have a happy marriage, to live life in moderation and be cordial to each other.
This golden couple deserves golden words – “More years to their lives.”
