Trump affirms that Gaetz “was doing very well” to be attorney general, but appreciates that he does not want to “be a distraction”
MADRID, 21 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Matt Gaetz, candidate for attorney general of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, submitted his resignation this Thursday, considering that his appointment was “unfairly becoming a distraction” due to his investigation into alleged inappropriate sexual behavior.
“It is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction from the very important work of the Trump/Vance transition. There is no time to waste in an unnecessarily protracted fight in Washington, which is why I will withdraw my name to serve as attorney general,” has announced in X.
“Trump’s Justice Department must be ready and in place from day one,” said Gaetz, who assured that before making this decision he had received the support of “many” senators. The Upper House is in charge of validating the proposals that the magnate presents for his new administration.
“I remain committed to ensuring that Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history. I will always be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and am confident that he will save America,” has concluded.
For his part, Donald Trump has highlighted Gaetz’s efforts to win the nomination as attorney general. “He was doing very well,” he said on his Truth account, his own social network.
“At the same time, he didn’t want to be a distraction to the Administration, for which he has the utmost respect. Matt has a wonderful future and I look forward to all the great things he will do,” he said.
This proposal had not fully caught on in the most traditional faction of the Republican Party, which still remembers how one of its great champions, Kevin McCarthy, ended up leaving the presidency of the House of Representatives after an initiative presented by Gaetz himself.
Likewise, the former congressman from Florida has an investigation open in the Ethics Commission of the House of Representatives into an alleged case of inappropriate sexual conduct with a minor under 17 years of age, illicit drug use and bribery.
The commission has already completed its investigations and has in its hands a final report that could end up buried because Gaetz resigned from his position as congressman in early November due to incompatibility with his nomination.
