MADRID 1 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least twenty migrants are missing, some are feared dead, after a boat capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa, as reported by the coastal authorities of the transalpine country this Wednesday in a statement.

Around 20 passengers who were traveling on the boat are missing and the Italian coast guard assures that the chances of rescuing more survivors alive – there are currently seven – from the shipwreck are slim.

The first reports indicate that the boat left Libya with several migrants heading to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. The citizens traveling on the boat came from Egypt, Syria and Sudan.

The search will continue despite slim hopes of finding more survivors. To date, the Italian Ministry of the Interior has recorded the arrival in Italy of around 66,000 people in boats from North Africa. In the same period last year, the figure was about 158,000.
