Ukraine sends 500 tons of flour to Syria in a “humanitarian program” after the fall of Al Assad

Zelensky emphasizes that kyiv “supports the Syrian people in a time of need” and says that the shipment will benefit some 167,000 people

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced this Friday the shipment of 500 tons of wheat flour to Syria as part of a program “in cooperation” with the World Food Program (WFP), less than two weeks after showing kyiv’s willingness to help Damascus “prevent a food crisis” after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime.

“As promised, we are supporting the Syrian people in a time of need. 500 tons of Ukrainian wheat flour are on their way to Syria as part of our ‘Grain from Ukraine’ humanitarian program, in cooperation with the WFP,” he told through your account on the social network X.

Thus, he specified that this flour “will be delivered to 33,250 families, or 167,000 people” during the coming weeks. “Each package weighs 15 kilograms and can feed a family of five for a month,” explained the Ukrainian president.

“We wish Syria and its people security, stability and recovery. We know the true value of those things,” concluded Zelensky, who unveiled on December 15 a food aid program for Syria after the flight of Al Assad due to the offensive. of jihadists and rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS).

The offensive in Syria, launched on November 27 from the province of Idlib, allowed jihadists and rebels to take the capital, Damascus, and put an end to the regime of the Al Assad family, in power since 1971 – first with Hafez al Assad (1971-2000) and later with his son, Bashar–, in the face of a constant withdrawal of government troops, also supported by Russia and Iran.
