MADRID, 26 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has reported that it carried out an airstrike on Tuesday against the jihadist group Al Shabaab in southern Somalia in collaboration with Somali forces that resulted in the death of two terrorists.

“The attack killed two members of Al Shabaab and no civilians were injured. The United States Africa Command is taking measures to prevent harm to civilians,” he said in a statement, adding that protecting the population is a “vital part ” of its operations in Africa.

Likewise, he has indicated that US forces “will continue to train, advise and equip” Somali forces with the aim of “degrading” Al Shabaab. “Somalia remains critical to maintaining security in East Africa,” the Command added.

For its part, the Somalia Ministry of Information has detailed in a statement published on social networks that the operation has allowed the neutralization of a senior Al Shabaab official, Mohamed Mire Jama, sanctioned by Washington in October 2022.

Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hasan Seij Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
