Most of these companies’ fortunes are already subsidized by the taxpayer, says GMB union
The GMB union has described as “absolutely pathetic” the announcement by big retailers that they will have to cut jobs if they are forced to pay a little more tax.
Nadine Houghton, GMB national officer, said:
“It is absolutely pathetic that multi-million dollar companies claim poverty because they are forced to pay more to support public services.
“Most of the fortunes of these companies are already subsidized by taxpayers: they pay very low wages that must then be supplemented with employment benefits.
“And some companies – for example Asda – have been systematically squandering fortunes made by underpaying their workers.
“It is only fair that they now contribute a little more to rebuilding our country.”
