European Champions Chelsea would continue the Champions League title defense this season against Real Madrid, in the quarter finals of the competition. The Thomas Tuchel's side won the competition last season, with an impressive run to the final which saw them knockout Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, and Real Madrid, before defeating the Pep Guardiola's Manchester City team to be crowned as the Champions of Europe.

This season, they are looking to successfully defend their crown, and would have to do that in a more difficult manner, as their route to the finals makes it almost impossible for them to reach the final, talkless of retaining the title.

In this article, we will be looking at the reasons why it could be impossible for Chelsea to reach the Champions League final this season.

1. Real Madrid & Manchester City Would Want A Revenge

Chelsea flourished last season being tagged the underdogs club in the competition, which saw them mastermind an impressive win over Real Madrid and Manchester City on their road to winning the European crown.

Their Champions League route to the finals for this season has made it possible for them to face both their last season's semi final and final opponent, before they could reach the finals of this year's edition, which could make it extremely difficult for them to go through both opponents again this season, due to the fact that both teams would be gunning for a revenge against the Thomas Tuchel's side.

Chelsea's quarter final opponent Real Madrid would be hoping to revenge their last season's semi final elimination, when both teams meet again this season, and even if Chelsea manager to get past the Spanish club in the quarter final, to progress to the semi final, they are likely to come against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City side, who they defeated in the finals last season.

Manchester City is another side who will be calling for a revenge against Chelsea this season, they have already defeated Chelsea twice in the league this season, but that might not be enough to redeem themselves from losing the Champions League title last season.

It would be extremely difficult, for Chelsea to defeat Manchester City again this season to progress to the finals of the Champions League, which makes their route to the finals almost an impossible one.
