World leaders mourn Carter’s death, highlighting his commitment to peace and human rights

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, as well as other world leaders have shown their condolences for the death this Sunday of former President of the United States Jimmy Carter.

Starmer, for his part, has mourned Carter’s death, appealing to his “decades of selfless public service” and his “dedication to peace.”

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has also expressed his condolences, taking the opportunity to thank “its unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked aggression.”

“He was a leader who served during a time when Ukraine was not yet independent, but his heart was firmly with us in our continued fight for freedom,” he added.

From Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sent his “deepest condolences” to Carter’s relatives, whose memory, he assured, “will always be very dear in Hungary.”

“By returning the Holy Crown to the Hungarian people in the late 1970s, he gave freedom-loving Hungarians hope in a desperate time,” he declared on his X social network account.

On the other hand, the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has said that “Europe is in mourning with the people of the United States” following the death of the political leader, who has highlighted his “decisive role in resolving conflicts that changed the course of history.”

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, has assured that he is “deeply saddened” by Carter’s death, highlighting his “significant” contribution to international peace and security, before and after his Presidency, also praising his drive “to the work of the United Nations”.

“President Carter will be remembered for his solidarity with the most vulnerable, his abiding grace, and his unwavering faith in the common good and our common humanity. His legacy as a peacemaker, defender of human rights, and humanitarian will endure,” he said.
