Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested that the “hot stage” of war with Russia could come if Ukraine becomes part of NATO and has stated that, as long as the country’s international borders are respected, he would be open to recover their territories “later”.
“If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, the territory of Ukraine that we have under our control must be taken under the umbrella of NATO,” the president said in an interview for the British channel Sky News in which this “leads would allow us to negotiate the return of the rest (of territories) later diplomatically.”
Zelensky has insisted on the maintenance of “internationally recognized” Ukrainian borders as an essential requirement and has claimed the need for a ceasefire to “guarantee that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin will not again” take over more Ukrainian land.
Thus, he has acknowledged his willingness to “work with the new president”-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to “share ideas with him and his opinion.”
“I want to work with him directly because there are different voices of people around him. And that is why we should not allow anyone around us to destroy our communication,” the Ukrainian president added in this regard, recalling that they have already had a first “warm, good and constructive” contact.
Since the US elections at the beginning of the month, Zelensky has repeatedly reiterated his willingness to “maintain close dialogue and advance” cooperation between Washington and kyiv, arguing that “strong and unwavering US leadership is vital.” for the world and for a just peace,” and “I value Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach to international affairs.”
